Well, you already aware of the fact that diabetes never leaves you alive and kicking! As par, the data of the World Health Organization (WHO), in the year 2015, approx 1.6 million people died of diabetes only, every year! And around 2.2 million deaths were due to high blood glucose levels.

Introduction to Diabetes:

Recognized as a chronic disease worldwide, diabetes dysfunctions the body from making any or enough insulin which results in an increased blood sugar levels. It is basically a metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to make proper use of glucose. Known as “Madhumeha” in Sanskrit, it is a type of vataja prameha that can be co-related to Diabetes. It leads to a variety of complication to the body organs especially for the nerves, heart, eyes, kidneys and blood vessels. Types of diabetes are associated with type 1, type 2, pre-diabetes, gestational (pregnancy) diabetes and other types. In Ayurveda, 20 forms of diabetes are recognized from which 4 are due to Vata dosha, 6 from Pitta, and another 10 are caused by Kapha, but mainly it is because of the Kapha Dosha.

Causes of Diabetes According to Ayurveda:

  • Diet including sugar, fats, potatoes, rice believes to increase Kapha Dosha.
  • Lack of exercise.
  • Mental stress and strain.
  • Excessive sleep etc.

Treatments for diabetes are chosen based on the dosha or the causative factors. Ayurveda believes in eliminating the root cause of disease which is the main step in treating a disease. Because of the above-mentioned causes, agni is disturbed resulting in provoking the kapha dosha which vitiates the fat, muscle and watery elements (medas, mamsa and udaka) of the body and which further causes prameha that is predominant of various doshas. If untreated eventually becomes madhumeha over a period of time.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Diabetes:

Meal plans are the cornerstone of managing diabetes. It is mainly the balanced diet with a few modifications and proper spacing between food intakes. It includes lessening of the fats, salts, alcohol, and caffeine in the diet.

  • Regular exercise in any form like yoga or gym is a must. Try to walk as long as you can. Basically, the purpose is to burn the extra calories that we intake all day long.
  • Asanas like ‘Paschimottanasan’ and ‘Halasan’ etc. are effective.
  • Each and every body frame has some set of body weight measures. Find out yours and follow a strict schedule to fit in the scale.
  • Try to reduce stress by opting for meditation at least once a day.
  • Avoid sleeping during daytime instead occupy yourself in some sort of physical activities.

Many of the natural herbs, veggies and fruits are recommended to take on a regular basis as well. Amla juice, Triphala juice, Cinnamon powder added with water, Bitter Gourd (Karela) juice, Jamun seeds powder with lukewarm water, snake gourd, Methi seeds soaked, crushed in water are considered the optimal solutions for those who are not interested to go on medications.
